Camberwell

Like many other places in South London, in Camberwell, wealthy and poor areas stand right next to each other and the differences are huge. Walking across one street may take you into completely different neighbourhood. There are some nice parks, pubs and cafés in this area. It's still going through its gentrification, so it may be a bit rough around the edges, but that only makes the place more interesting. I'm guessing this place will see some more interesting places very shortly.

Parks:
  • Ruskin Park is a small but atmospheric park with a pergola garden, small pond and a community garden. There are also some sports fields, such as tennis courts and football field.
  • Burgess Park is a big park with sports fields, lake, and excellent picnic opportunities. It's surrounded by depressing element blocs, but the park itself gives nice spice for the otherwise gloomy area.
Cafés:
  • Love Walk is a great little café with excellent food and coffee. There is some art on display as well and the clientele fits that artsy atmosphere.
  • Daily Goods Coffee is a nice independent coffee shop with excellent baristas. you can also get some amazing cakes and if you're looking for coffee making equipment for home, you can find it here.
Shopping:
  • Rat Records is an old-school record store with second hand vinyl and CDs. It's not the best place to go to buy just released stuff, but you can make great finds of old classics here.
Drinking:
  •  Stormbird is a heaven for a beer-lover. Vast selection of excellent craft beers on tap and in bottles. The atmosphere is fairly average, but if you just want to sit with your mates and taste excellent beers, this is the place for you.
  • Hermit's Cave doesn't have quite as good a beer selection as Stormbird, but it's got that relaxed old-school pub atmosphere with comfy sofas and a fireplace. They have East London Brewery real ales on tap.
  • The Sun of Camberwell is an enormous pub with beer
gardens in the front and back. There's also a quiet room if you're not into that loud music. There are some fussball tables and occasional bands playing. Proper neighbourhood pub with lots going on.
Art:
  • South London Gallery is a small gallery for modern art. They have changing exhibitions of which most are free. they usually have quite political and societal themes. Great art that makes you think.
  Eating:
  • Vineyard Greek Tavern is an authentic Greek restaurant set in a white building with white and blue table cloths and some seating outside. With the Greek music in the background, when it's warm outside, it fells like you're actually in Greece. The food could also be a bit better, but the atmosphere makes up for the quality of food.
  • Maloko is an amazing little Afro-Caribbean restaurant that serves crepes and galettes. The whole menu is vegetarian and there are also plenty of vegan options available. Delicious stuff!
Entertainment:
  • The Junction is a great little jazz bar close to the Loughborough Junction railway station. They have live jazz there every night of the week. It's always pleasant and not too crowded.
