Bloomsbury & Fitzrovia

Bloomsbury has academic air about it. A couple of London's most well-known universities are here, along with bookshops and museums. The houses look like university campuses and there are small parks here and there. Fitzrovia looks about the same. It's full of beautiful small squares and old bohemian pubs. The range in restaurants is vast and there are interesting tastes from all over the world. I cover these two areas on the same page since it's hard to tell them apart from each other.

Sights:
  • University College London's (UCL) main building is an impressive piece of architecture. Inside you can find the body of a famous philosopher Jeremy Bentham. The head is missing though, because rumour has it, it was used as a football by the students in the 19th century. SOAS (The School of African and Oriental Studies) and LSHTM (London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine) are also nearby.
Shopping:
  • Another one of London's Fopp stores is here in Bloomsbury. Cheap films, music and books. The collection is not as big as in the one in Soho, but it's still a nice store.
  • Planet Organic is an excellent grocer serving an amazing collection of organic and vegetarian foods. The prices may be a bit high, but it's worth it. Some of these products you can't find anywhere else. Finns and other Nordic folk may be delighted to hear that they have easy-to-bake rye bread, that's really delicious!
  • On the Beat is a nice and small old-time record store. It's mainly selling second hand vinyl, but also CDs are available. Especially if you're looking for 60's and 70's rock, soul or funk on vinyl, you might well find what you're looking for here.
Museums:
  • World's biggest storage of stolen artifacts, British Museum, is in Bloomsbury. Enormous museum features ancient artefacts, statues and whole walls indoors. If you wanted to see everything in the museum it would take months. The best bet is to really focus on one or two sections at a time or just wander around.
Entertainment:
  • Totally Acoustic is an acoustic music club featuring music acts which are chosen by delightful MJ Hibbet. If you haven't seen him live, you should go and see him. Funny and nerdy lyrics accompanied by a small guitar. Other acts have also been great!
Parks:
  •  St. George's Gardens is a hidden park in the middle of Bloomsbury. It used to be a cemetery and there are, even now, a lot of tombs and statues. It's a great place to have picnic, cause not many people find their way here.
Drinking:
  • Fitzroy Tavern is a great murky pub with a great selection of Samuel Smith beers on tap. George Orwell and other famous authors have drank here.
  • The Wheatsheaf is a quite small pub, but if you manage to find an available table, it's a cozy place to drink good ales. It's got wood panelled walls and painted glass windows. There's a sense of the olden days here.
Cafés:
  • Freestate Coffee is one of the new hipster coffeehouses, that have been invading the streets of London lately. The coffee is skillfully made and you can buy your own equipment and coffee beans here as well. The atmosphere is also nice.

Eating:

  • Orchard is a great vegetarian lunch restaurant in atmospheric Sicilian Avenue. Portions are fairly small, but with the prices, you may afford to buy two courses. The soups are delicious, but so is everything else. There's also an outside sitting area for warm days.
  • Fitzrovia is full of nice looking restaurants. Shiro is one of the ones I've been to. It's an atmospheric small Japanese restaurant selling mouthwatering sushi and teriyaki bento. The prices in sushi are quite high, but it's quality stuff. Bento boxes you can even get quite cheap.
  • Dim T serves delicious Asian food from dim sums to pad thai. The atmosphere is nice and cozy and the food is good value and great tasting! It's a chain, so it's not very unique.
  • Josephine's Filipino Restaurant serves fantastic Filipino food. The prices are not too bad for such great food and such great atmosphere. All the seafood dishes are fantastic, but the winning dish was the tofu in peanut sauce. Delicious!
