Peckham

Peckham looks a lot like an African neighbourhood. For a long time, there was no tube to this area, but the new overground line runs to Peckham Rye. This neighbourhood has a lot of African and Caribbean shops, restaurants and market stalls. Within a couple of years, a lot of cool cafés, pubs, bars, restaurants, book shops etc. have appeared on the streets of Peckham and Peckham has become one of the hotspots for London, where hip people want to hang out.

Sights:
  • Bellenden Road is completely different from the rest of the neighbourhood. Designers have designed uniquely its street lamps, facades and bus stops. This beautiful road has some nice looking cafés, pubs and bookshops of which I'm mentioning a few on this page.
  • Peckham Library is something of a sight. It defies gravity with it's upside down L-shape.
Eating:
  • The Begging Bowl is a fantastic fusion Thai restaurant. The prices are a bit high, but this is a complete culinary experience that you don't want to miss. The fish cakes are absolutely delicious. The idea is to compile your meal from a variety of small portions that you share with your friends.
  • Persepolis is definitely one of the best restaurants in London. This small shop/restaurant has amazing Iranian food in a cozy atmosphere. They have a great feast for about £20 per person that includes a great selection of mouthwatering dishes. You
can bring your own bottle of alcohol. Booking is essential.
  • Ganapati is a cozy little Indian restaurant with great vegetarian options and superb atmosphere.
  • Pedler has some innovative dishes in a great atmosphere. It leans a bit on fine dining, but the food is worth the slightly higher prices. They have great fusion dishes and cocktails.
Parks:
  • Surrey Canal Walk is a park that runs from Peckham to Burgess Park in Camberwell. This park has been placed on top of Surrey canal that used to run here. There are some beautiful bridges along the way.
  • Peckham Rye Common consists of broad field areas with sports grounds in the north part south of Peckham. In the south, there are more decorative gardens.
Cafés:
  • Peckham Pelican is a super-cool café with unfinished wood tables, comfy sofas, great coffee, food and alcoholic drinks. The place is usually filled with art students. They host various events from experimental music to spoken word, political events and theatre nights.
  • Anderson & Co. is more than a café. they also serve delicious food, bakery etc. Still, the coffee is the main ordeal. Fantastic baristas make wonderful espresso-based coffees.
Pubs:
  • Brick Brewery is a small microbrewery functioning under the railway lines. They have a tap room (it's mostly outside, so check the weather) as well. The beer is delicious here!
  • Bar Story is a beautiful and edgy bar under the railway lines. They also serve food. Behind the railway lines there's a nice and big outside area with some music in the weekend evenings in a variety of different venues. There's also some art on display at the Sassoon Gallery.
  • The Victoria Inn is a nice and big traditional English pub with
cozy sofas, bookshelves and a great variety of craft beers on tap. They also have delicious Bretagne cider on tap.
  • Peckham Beer Rebellion is one of the Late Knights Brewery's locations. This small pub has quite an amazing selection of real ales and craft beers.
  • White Horse is one of the most common names for a pub in London. Peckham's White Horse is a great large pub in a mock-Tudor house. They have a great atmosphere and it's not too crowded usually even in the weekends. Great beer selection as well.
  • The Hope is one of the greatest pubs in London. The decorations are really cozy with lots of antique lamps, large bookshelves and strange glowing forest walls and chandeliers in one room.
Shopping:
  • Review is an old-school book shop. It's small but it has some interesting books and the atmosphere is just right for browsing through their collections. they also host some book launches from time to time.
 Restaurant Bars:
  •  Frank's Café is one of the most hip places in London at the moment. And there's a good reason for it. This café, bar and restaurant is located at the top of a multi-storey car park with excellent views over London. The food may not be the best option, especially for a vegetarian and for a beer drinker the selection is quite slim, but the view makes up for all of that. There's also some modern art in the car park itself! It's unfortunately closed during the winter months.
Cinema:
  • Bussey Building hosts an outdoor rooftop film club. Great films above the rooftops of London.
  • Peckhamplex is an independent cinema. It's looks a bit messy, but it's super cheap (£5 tickets), so it's very popular. you get to see even brand new films with very cheap prices here.
Entertainment:
  • The Four Quarters is kind of a bar and kind of an old-school arcade. They have a variety of old American arcade games, such as Pacman and Tron, and pinball machines. These are operated by US quarters that you can exchange there. They also have a good variety of craft beers in bottles and on tap. Quite hipstery, don't you think?
  • Ghost Notes at Peckham Levels is a great jazz venue. The venue doesn't look like much with its ultra-modern simplistic decorations, but the bands and artists they get are really good.
