Borough

Borough is an interesting neighbourhood south of London Bridge. It's mainly known for the market and The Shard, but there's more there. Nice pubs, churches and some interesting pieces of architecture. It's a lot nicer than the north bank on the other side of Thames. Borough can get quite busy on the weekends and especially on Fridays when business-clad people stay in the area after work.

Markets:
  • Borough Market is the biggest food market in London. Cheeses, meats, vegetables, bakery treats, coffee, spices and other delicacies. There are some stalls with food to eat there, but you can also buy things to eat at home or to prepare yourself. Many stalls allow you to taste things before buying. There are some restaurants, wine and beers hops etc. around the market. As a curiosity, there are umbrellas covering parts of the borough market's open archways.
Sights:
  • Southwark Cathedral is a beautiful church next to London Bridge. The entrance is free!
  • The Shard is the tallest building in Europe. It reaches the hight of 309.6 meters. It's quite expensive to go up there, so I would suggest other options for seeing London from above.
Entertainment:
  • There is a replica of the original Shakespear's Globe theatre in Borough. You can catch plays in authentic atmosphere. Tickets for the floor are not too expensive, but you have to be prepared for rain.
  • The Golden Hinge II is a replica of an old ship from Tudor times. It functions as a museum, but they also host gigs and other events every once in a while. An excellent venue!
  • Omeara is a great little underground music venue. It looks like an abandoned Victorian dance hall. They host surprisingly big names on their gigs, so it's a great chance to see your favourites in an intimate space.
 Drinking:
  • The Old Thameside Inn is nothing special really. The great thing about this pub is the beer garden by the Thames. Drink your pint and watch the river!
  • George Inn is a wonderful enormous coaching inn. It has an outside balcony upstairs and about eight different rooms. Some of them have wood panels, some of them have old paintings and some of them have old fireplaces. It looks like a huge country house. Both Shakespeare and Charles Dickens were customers in this pub and they even mention it in some of their work.
  • The Rake is a great place for a craft beer. They have a wide selection of beers from real ales to American style I.P.A.s. The place is quite small, but there's more space on the patio when the weather permits.
  • The Wheatsheaf is a cozy pub with a great outdoor area. They serve fantastic beers including Meantime brewery goods! It gets really packed on weekends though.
  • Katzenjammers is a busy German beer cellar. It gets quite crowded and noisy in the weekends, but it has a great selection of delicious German beers with authentic long tables and 1 litre pints.
Eating:
  • There are not many Peruvian restaurants in Europe. Tito's Peruvian Restaurant serves good Peruvian food and beer in a nice atmosphere. Try the cheviche!
  • The Menier Chocolate Factory offers good (pub-kind-of) food in a nice atmoshere. The veggie burger is absolutely delicious. And as the name of the place suggests, the chocolate brownies are so good. In the same building you can find a theatre and art galleries if you want entertainment with your food.
