Highbury & Canonbury

Highbury is a pretty average London neighbourhood but it has this upscale North London feel to it. Victorian houses, nice pubs, churches and football fans. Slightly less to do here than in the neighbouring Islington, but Highbury has its moments. The atmosphere is really calm and it's easy to find quiet pubs (except when Arsenal is playing). Canonbury is in this same post, as this neighbouring area is very similar to Highbury.

Entertainment:
  • Highbury is the home for Arsenal Football Club. Games are pretty expensive and the tickets are hard to get, but the atmosphere is undescribable when tens of thousands of people cheer simultaniously to a goal.
  • The Garage is a music venue with a variety of gigs. Upstairs, there's a smaller venue, Thousand Islands that hosts smaller indie gigs. Great addition to London's massive selection of music venues.
Drinking:
  • The Alwyne Castle has nice sofas, decorative lamps and a firepalce. The beer selection is fantastic and the menu with pub food is pretty good. Not many choices for vegetarians though. There's also an outside terrace.
  • The Alma is a nice little pub with quite good beer selection. The walls have been decorated with Hollywood film memorabilia and pictures.
  • Hops & Glory is a great little pub with excellent beer selection. The food is a bit expensive, but if you're there only for the drinks, it's all good. The ceiling looks amazing with carved decorations.
  •  Highbury Brewhouse & Kitchen is a great and quite large bar with their own beers brewed on site. They have a wide selection of pub food. This bar has another branch close to the Angel station. The beer selection is slightly different in these branches.
  • Snooty Fox is a nice little pub right next to the Canonbury station. They have an excellent beer selection in cask and keg and they also have some great pub grub. Excellent pies and burgers.
Eating:
  • Rusty Bike Thai Kitchen is a small Thai restaurant with amazing curries, pad thais etc. They also sell Thai food stuffs for you to cook at home.
  • Au Lac is a small Vietnamese restaurant close to Emirates stadium. It's not quite as good as the Vietnamese restaurants in East London, but it does come pretty close. The food is fresh and delicious and the prices aren't too bad.
 Cafés:
  •  Ink @ 84 is a small book shop and a café. you can enjoy your flat white while browsing through books in this independent book shop. Pretty neat!
