Mile End & Stepney

Mile End is mostly a poor neighbourhood, but there are some modern new areas close to the Regent's Canal and Victoria Park. Rows of similar-looking houses, council flats and off-licenses. Stepney is in the same article, since it's difficult to draw borders for these two areas. Some parts of Mile End are still fairly rough, but it used to be worse as this brilliant song by Pulp say it: Mile End.

Sights:
  • Tower Hamlets Cemetery is one of the "magnificent seven" cemeteries around London. Terrific tombstones dressed in ivy and old curled trees. Good place for a walk.
  • Regent's canal is interesting near Mile End. There are modern buildings, graffiti and locks. Definitely worth a walk.

Parks:
  • Victoria Park is north of Mile End. In this part of the park, there is a beautiful lake and chinese pagoda.
Cinema:
  • If you don't like those huge chain cinemas and their expensive prices, Genesis Cinema on Mile End Road has great value tickets in a nice old-time cinema atmosphere.
Drinking:
  • Mile End doesn't really yet have so many cool pubs and bars, but at least they're on their way. The Victoria is a quite large pub with great real ales and food. There's a beer garden in the back, cocktail room and an upstairs dining room! The clientele is quite hipstery.
