Shadwell

Shadwell is an area of narrow streets, churches, old docks and ships. There are a few nice looking pubs around, but unfortunately I haven't done my research well enough to recommend anything. Shadwell is a lot cleaner than its northern neighbour Whitechapel. It can be described as a mix of its neighbouring Whitechapel and Wapping.

Sights:
  • Tobacco Dock is an old warehouse functioning as a venue for all sorts of events. In the area, there are a bunch of decorative small canals and an old pirate-style ship.
  • Cable Street mural is a fantastic wall painting portraying the battle between the fascist movement and antifascists and the police in 1936.
Drinking:
  • Wilton's Music Hall's Mahogany Bar is one of the most beautiful bars in London. The bear brick walls along with light advertisements and wooden floors makes the place look quite magical. They have a great beer and wine selection. There's a cocktail bar upstairs and the music hall itself offers theatre, dance and music.
  • The George Tavern is an old pub, already mentioned by Dickens, that nowadays draws young art oriented crowds. They have a variety of events from live music to clubs and art quizzes. The place can get quite crowded during the weekends, because there aren't that many pubs around this area. They have quite good beer selection and music is usually not too bad either.
