Westminster

Westminster is the tourist trap of London. Most of the sights that you "must see" are here. In the summertime, Westminster is really crowded and most of the restaurants and pubs are overpriced. Some of the massive governmental buildings and churches on the other hand are beautiful and I don't blame people for wanting to see some of the most iconic landscapes in London. Westminster is the place to see the London of postcards.

Sights:
  • The Houses of Parliament is a magnificent building and if you've never been to London you may want to take a closer look at the building.
  • Westminster Abbey is probably the church everyone wants to see in London. But I must warn you that the entrance fee is ridiculously high and you can see more than enough of great churches for free in London.
  • Buckingham Palace in my opinion is not that glorious that it would be a "must see" attraction. The changing of the guards is for those who like militaristic marches.
  • Westminster Cathedral is one of the most beautiful churches in London and you can enter for free. The romanesque style is very different from the usual gothic churches of London.
Parks:
  • Westminster is the home for St. James's Park, which is highly organised but beautiful garden with various birds, including pelicans
  • Behind the Buckingham Palace is Green Park. Nothing special really. Okay for sitting in a park in summertime.

Art:
  • Tate Britain is the Tate Modern for specificly British art. Special Exhibitions cost money, but you can enter permanent exhibitions for free.
Eating and drinking:
  • Westminster really isn't a place to eat in restaurants or drink in pubs. Everything is overpriced. If you're in the area though, try the Sherlock Holmes pub. Nice ales on tap and the decor is fancy and old!
