St. Luke's (Barbican)

St. Luke's is a small area between City and Shoreditch. The most interesting place here is the Barbican Centre, which offers many kinds of cultural activities and terrific architecture. But more about this below. This area is technically within the City of London, but it has a slightly different feel to the rest of it and partly it resembles Finsbury that's just around the corner.

Sights:
  • Barbican Centre is an amazing enormous piece of architecture. Its futuristic concrete towers, bridges and stairways look as if they were from some sort of 60's science fiction novel. Just to see the buildings from barbican's upper deck is worth a visit. Barbican Centre also hosts many cultural activities from large scale concerts to small art galleries, library and movie theatre. There's also a rain forest room, which is a great place to visit in wintertime. Warmth and good smells of the jungle.
Museums:
  • Barbican is a home to one of London's most interesting museums: Museum of London. The museum is a really well organised story of London's history. And best of all, it is free. From the windows, you can see pieces of old London wall from the Roman era.
Drinking:
  • Fox & Anchor  is a beautiful old pub with highly decorated walls and beautiful lamps. There's a truly old feel to this place. There's a quite expensive but amazing looking hotel upstairs.
Shopping:
  • Barbican Chimes is a nice little music store selling classical music CDs, ukuleles, and other small musical instruments. The main thing here though is that they have an enormous storage of sheet music. If you're looking for classical or pop sheet music, this is the place to go to.
 Eating:
  • Carnevale is a small mediterranean vegetarian restaurant. Eat in at a small backyard, or take away from the deli. Delicious falafels, aubergine dishes etc.
