Paddington

One of the largest hotel areas in London. This means lots of tourists and restaurants that don't necessarily give you your money's worth. There is also a modern office area behind the station and nearby Edgware Road is the Middle East of London. Paddington Station is obviously one of the most famous stations in London because of Paddington Bear. The combination of tourists and rich folk makes a fairly boring environment, but there are a few highlights.

Sights:
  • Paddington basin is a modern office block with the basin from which the Grand Union Canal begins. These modern buildings give a unique look for the canalside walks.
  • Edgware Road is the Middle East of London. A lot of Lebanese and Moroccan restaurants and cafés with people smoking shisha outside. Smells combine shisha, fumes from the busy street and charcoal food in restaurants.
Parks:
  • South of Paddington is Hyde Park with a magnificent entrance Marlborough Gate. Great for jogging, walking and picnics.
Eating:
  • Sawyer's Arms is one of the best gastro pubs that I've been to. For a vegetarian, the black bean burger is a really good choice.
  • Edgware Road offers multiple Middle Eastern restaurants, but unfortunately I don't have enough experience to recommend anything in particular. Take your chance and try one of those.
Drinking:
  • Most of the pubs in this area are pretty typical English Pubs. The Victoria on the other hand is really beautiful with its decorated wood furniture, tapestries and fireplaces.
  • The Swan is a nice Fuller's pub with good beer selection. Outside there is a nice terrace, although it's a bit noisy from time to time because of the busy road in front of it.
Sleeping:
  • Pavilion is one of the weirdest hotels I've ever seen. It's rooms have different themes from 'harlequin' to 'swan lake' and the decorations are over-the-top in every room. Even the waiting room was filled with old bookcases, statues and chandeliers. Great choise if you're looking for something different!
